Very comfortable night's sleep and great weather today. The trail was more of the same easy stroll through the Cochetopa Hills. There were some steep ups but they were mercifully short. Then the four miles downhill to the end of segment 17 a Lujan Creek Trailhead. Lo and behold who is there but CME's camp across the field. Before that though was a camp with a small thruhiker pavillion advertising trail magic. Well I don't mind if I do! My host was Apple who was doing some Forest Service volunteering monitoring water levels and taking care of CT and CDT thruhikers. He says 45 (!) have passed through this year so far. I'm surprised I haven't seen more. He expects over 300. He also trail angels on the AT at mile 111. Great guy and it was all much appreciated. Next I headed over to CME to say hello and get more info about water ahead. Sadly I planned to stop at Archuleta Creek for the night but was informed it was dry. I watered up courtesy of CME and planned to dry camp ahead. More easy miles took me to the end of an old logging road. I could have gone a little further but this old road makes a nice camping spot. I'm cowboy camping under the stars. Only a 20% chance of rain. It would be nice if I could catch up to CME tomorrow evening it is fish taco night but that would be 20+ miles. A coyote just sounded off. |
