Album: trips:United States:CO:Guyot

Mt Guyot: 22 Jun 2008

I don't have a tremendous amount to say about this trip so I'll make it quick. I was able to drive all the way up to Georgia Pass (11,600 ft) the night before and I slept under a beautiful sky. The next morning I was a bit disappointed because I had expected this to be a snow climb. I thought there would still be snow on the ridge but it was gone where I would be walking.

The last hundred vertical feet or so had some snow but I didn't realize how much trouble it would be until I arrived. I had two poles and my ice ax but hadn't worn anything special. The snow was very soft and totally rotten underneath. My feet were getting cold in my wet trail runners. Although I avoided the first snow crossing by dipping below it, the last 20-30 feet to the summit were very difficult. After two false starts I tried a higher crossing and began excavating a deep path through the snow. Eventually I crawled and stumbled onto the summit. Victory at last. I've included a few photos below that show some of my trenchwork.
