25 Mar 2007: day 44
Start Destination Daily Miles / Total
Stone Mtn State Park Campground State Park boundary ? / ?

Time to get on with real backpacking. I planned this as an easy day to help get back on regular schedule. The plan was to get a leisurely start and just hike through the park. On the other side of Stone Mtn the trail starts ascending from around 1300 feet to over 3700 ft. Although the total distance may have been only 10 miles I figured that the uphill would be more than enough in this heat.

I've been here before on a climbing trip. Jeff and I climbed the standard US lot and Great Arch. I was happy to have the chance to see it again and I was going to hike to the vantage point by way of Stone Mtn Falls which I hadn't seen before. That is a 200 ft. cascade in the cool shade. I expected a nice hike and wasn't disappointed.

Nobody was climbing the Great Arch but there was a team topping out on the first pitch of No Alternative, another classic line. Below the face was a giant group of fire/ rescue going through some testing at the historic homestead. I snapped a few pictures then walked down to Widow Creek and started the hike up to the Blue Ridge.

The first mile or so was easy. There the MST splits off and heads steeply up. I took a long food and water break break before beginning the ordeal. It was hot enough that I was just in shorts for the easy part. Once I started up the steep old road my head turned into a sweat faucet. My whole body was soaked but my head seemed the worst. I was running my finger across my forehead like a windshield wiper and sweat was running down my hand. At least the worst was over in less than an hour. So much for being freshly showered.
