19 Jul 2011: day 38
Start Destination Daily Miles / Total
Unnamed lake near Cataract Lake, 12,000 ft SE slope of Canby Mountain 9.1 today / 386.6 total

Damn rain! I left late after letting my stuff dry in the sun. I wasn't hiking until after 10:00. Within a half hour the sky started looking bad. Within an hour I was seeing rain, hearing thunder, and occasionally getting hit by fat raindrops. I got over my first obstacle and contoured around into the next valley. It looked bad and I decided to put up my tent and ride out the coming storm under cover because the next section would be very exposed. I lost almost 2 hours there.

I was lucky and avoided most of the rain for most of the remaining hike. The view were mostly spoiled though and the pictures aren't so good. At the end of the day with a half mile to go I got caught in a sudden squall. That sucked but could have been worse. Thirty minutes later and a violent storm pounded my tent with grauple and rain.

This short day puts me a little behind for getting into Silvertion tomorrow. Instead I'll just make it to the Animas River crossing. Thats okay though because it will be a beautiful low elevation (8,900 ft) spot and I had originally wanted to stay there. Now I get to and when I get to Silverton the next day it will be early and things will be open.
