17 Jul 2011: day 36
Start Destination Daily Miles / Total
Willow Creek, Snow Mesa Colorado Trail Memorial Yurt 13.8 today / 363.3 total

A couple storms blew through last night and the Beta Light tent held up to the buffeting and once more proved itself stormworthy. Seems like there will be storms again tonight but although I am high on the Divide at 11,700ft it will be a much different experience. I'm in the CT Memorial Yurt. I didn't even know it was here but a northbounder named Johnny told me. It is part of the Hinsdale Haute Route and left open in the summer. I've just been joined by d=rt who hiked 35 miles to get here! That's quite a big day. Don't expect that from me even on the return trip. He's an ultralight backpacker with a tiny pack. Mine is more traditional.

Anyway the 5.1 miles across and down Snow Mesa went by quickly. I met Johnny there who told me about this place but he was the only hiker. The weather started out nice but clouded up once I reached the other side of the highway. Going upJarosa Mesa I avoided a short shower but dodged others the rest of the day. I never got very wet. It was good hiking and I'm set up for a good day in the mountains tomorrow. This spring is the last water for awhile and there will be some quality time on the Divide.
