The hike down along Boulder Creek was supposed to be bad because of erosion, overgrowth, and a plenitude of rocks. I'm glad my information was wrong. Only a couple miles were badly overgrown. It was slow but not too bad and my pants took most of the abuse. Down Valley the treadway would disappear but there were plenty of rock cairns and posts to mark the path. I rather enjoyed it actually. And the water at Sycamore Creek was clear and flowing heavily. Any more water and I'd have to take my boots off. The underpass crossing Hwy 87 was my third and last break. It was so nice and cool I just had to stop and lay down to dry off. The hike up from Hwy 87 was through similar terrain but without the creek. The trail passes near the village of Sunflower (no services) and heads up what appears to be old ranch roads. I'm stopped at a campsite just off a jeep road near some power lines. From here the trail winds up into the Mazatzal Mountains, but that is for tomorrow. Lot's of flies here! |
