Best day on the trail yet! It started off in the morning with me finding a tarantula on the trail. That is one of the animals I wanted to see out here. And that is just how I want to see it - on the trail. I don't want to wake up to one on my chest staring at me or running at my face. Then the day got better with a stop at Hutch's Pool. It was just far enough that I was beginning to work up a sweat. I had heard that it was deep enough to jump in which is what I needed to do because it was going to be cold. There were some weekenders down there but only 1 boy was in the waterand his dad said it took him an hour to work up to his waist. Mom directed me to the jumping off point and off I went sans shoes and socks. My clothes needed the washing as bad as me. The water was staggeringly cold. My heart was racing and I was almost hyperventilating. I made a movie but it isn't so good. I'm out of practice since my canyoneering movies. I spent about 2.5 hours hanging out there talking to the family. It was wonderfully restorative. I felt like I just came from a town stop. On the way out I convinced two other thruhikers to take the side trip.

The rest of the day was hiking uphill. Going up the valley was very nice. It was a gentle grade and all the water meant tree cover plus the sun was mostly behind clouds. In the upper reaches the 2 other thruhikers caught up and we chatted. They started the day after me with a Canadian girl. I read her journal on TrailJournals so I know she's plugging away, but they haven't seen her since day 1. We both had some strange bee experiences too. A big bee will just hang out hovering right next to us for 3-45 minutes. It happened twice to me and once to Lou. We don't know what to make of it. Next time I'm making a movie. Anyway from Romero pass the trail took the ridge. It was very steep with lots of exposed rock to negotiate. The sun came out and I had a good sweat started again. That was a rough but fun trail. Not much mileage but it was still a hard day. Tomorrow will be to but there is a brief stop at Summerhaven to look forward to. Soon I'll be at Oracle where I may take a full day off.

It's chilly up here. I'm at 7,280 ft. or so which is my highest camp for I don't know how long. I had a little twig fire but that is out and I'm listening to the wind in the trees and and some other campers further down the trail. Time to turn in for the night.
