I was hiking this morning before the others were awake. I'm consistently getting cold between 3-4 and waking up. It's time to replace that sleeping bag because with the 15 ° liner that I am using, I should be sleeping well. Anyway the early start was welcome because the earlier I can reach the trailhead the better. I'm being picked up by Mike, aka Purple Haze, who thruhiked the AZT last year. This year he is doing the PCT. The miles flew by rapidly. The terrain is easy with only 260ft or so of ascent. Still the trail is winding with rocks and cactus to avoid. I'm still drawing from the water I took at Kentucky camp. I have plenty. The temps are in the upper 90's - low 80's. It is hot when hiking though when I rest in the shade I quickly get cold. It seems like there is always a strong breeze. Mike picked me up without incident and we headed to Nimbus Brewery for lunch. The Monkeyshine beer and Bacon & Blue burger were fantastic. Mike's a great guy and we reminisced about my exotic locales especially Columbia. I've got a comfortable guest room in his house where I met his wife Judy. Excellent hosts. Today will be one of the highlights of the trip. |
